MICON 2018 - Management International Conference on ‘Emerging trends in Human Resource Management’

MICON 2018 - Management International Conference on ‘Emerging trends in Human Resource Management’ was jointly organized by Department of Management Technology (DMT), Shri Ramdeobaba College of Engineering and Management (RCOEM), Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and University of District of Columbia (UDC), USA on 14th & 15th December, 2018 at Hotel Tuli Imperial. Aim of the two day Conference was to provide a platform to academicians, industrialists and students for knowledge sharing and an opportunity for interacting with the eminent Corporate HR Heads from across India.

MICON 2018 was officially inaugurated in the presence of Air Vice Marshal Nikhil Ramesh Chitnis VSM, Air Officer Engineering Services, HQ Maintenance Command, Indian Air Force. He was welcomed and felicitated by Shri Chandrakantbhai Thakar, Vice Chairman, RCOEM. The other dignitaries present on the dais to grace the Inauguration of MICON 2018 were Shri Govindlal Agarwal, General Secretary, RCOEM, Shri Rajendra Purohit, Secretary, RCOEM and Mr. Abhaya Singh, Head – CII Vidarbha Zone. Members from management Shri. Dwarkaprasadji Gupta, Shri Bagwandas Daga and Shri Devendra Sahu were prominently present for the inauguration. During the inaugural function of MICON 2018, message of His Excellency Shri Banwarilal Purohit, Governor of Tamil Nadu and Chairman, RCOEM was read by Dr.Chandan Vichoray Head-DMT. In the message Honorable Governor congratulated the Department on its initiation of this wonderful platform for the industry and academician interaction. He expressed his wishes to the entire team of MICON 2018.  Dr. Neeta V Shah, Professor, DMT, RCOEM read the message of Dr. Devdas Shetty, Chairman International Advisory Committee MICON 2018 & Dean, UDC, USA.

The welcome address was given Mr. Vijay Rawal, Vice Chairman, CII Vidharbha Zonal Council and Director and CFO of Lemken India Agro Equipment Private Limited. He explained the work of CII to bridge the gap between the industry and the academia and working closely with the Government in the policy advocacy and improve the state of industry in the country. Increase the contribution of industry for the national growth. The opening remarks were delivered by Dr. R S Pande, Principal, RCOEM. He emphasized on the need for collaboration through MICON to increase industry interaction opportunities for providing quality education. With respect to the recent trends, people are the most important asset of organization, where cognitive supporting system, people analytics and Industry 4.0 will impact employment patterns and stressed on how technology will have an influence in the personal and professional life.

AVM N R Chitnis VSM Chief Guest of the Inaugural function, spoke about the role of Human Resource (HR) and its importance in the Air Force. He firmly asserted Institutions do not transform, Organizations do not defend, Units and formations do not sacrifice but People do. He drew analogies for bringing organization and people together.

In his Presidential address, Shri Chandrakantbhai Thakar, Vice Chairman, RCOEM expressed that it is easy to tackle machines and tackling Human Resource is more difficult. He expressed that generally head makes the policy, but needs a team to implement it effectively. Every employee should know their capabilities and their organization in totality. If totality is maintained it can lead to involvement of all stakeholders, eventually leading to the success of the organization. The vote of thanks was proposed by Dr. Rajiv Khaire, Organizing Secretary, MICON 2018. The event was compered by Dr. Ruchi Sao.

Key note Speaker

The Keynote address was given by Mr. Ranjan Mishra, Senior Vice President, Human Resource, Vodafone-Idea Limited. In his session, Mr Ranjan Mishra has amazingly introduced the concept of Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity & Ambiguity (VUCA) to the audience in a thought provoking manner. He brilliantly related the concept of VUCA with Brexit, Donald Trump Governance and demonetisation.  He also emphasised that every company should have a model which would take care of changes in the economy by expressing the concept of Paytm during demonetisation. He also described two critical HR variables like talent mobility and economic mobility as critical factors to manage VUCA. He concluded by explaining the role of leadership in VUCA world, the story of courage and adaptability with an example of Kodak. The session was compered by Dr. Aamir Khan.

Plenary session

The first plenary session was addressed by Mr. Hakimuddin Ali, Chairman, Imerys India, Director Strategy & BD Africa, India & Middle East at Imerys. The topic was Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) & Sustainable development (SD) make business sense. Mr Ali in his address emphasized on the importance of CSR being an integral part of Business. He firmly believes that CSR and SD can be made profitable for the organisations.  He explained how the TATA Group works with schools and communities that helped them to save power. He explained the application of Human Development Index (HDI) to keep track of CSR effectiveness in villages. He also informed about Imerys’s focus on sanitation, education, water harvesting and potable water which are the need of the hour. The session was conducted by CMA Vishal Mehta.

Day 1 : Panel Discussion 1 on “Capacity Enhancement in Industry 4.0”

With every radical change in industrial revolution, the shelf life of change is declining, which has led to a do or die situation for the country and industry. The panel demystified Industry 4.0 as process automation, connecting the machines and processes and taking it to the next level where manual intervention is reduced. The quality, efficiency and productivity is the need of the hour. It’s time for everyone to learn, unlearn and relearn. The panel discussed on preparedness of India to face Industry 4.0, keeping in view the skill development programme and Make In India initiative. It is rightly said that the need of the hour is evolving capable workforce. A cultural change and competency of eclectic thinking is required which is learning by observation. It is not restricted to single paradigm but in multiple theories and ideas is essential. Integration of man and machine is what we can look forward to in Industry 4.0. For younger people who aspire for start-ups should look for opportunity and understand that there is no quick road to success. It was concluded that we are better prepared to face Industry 4.0 and enhance capacities by bringing in behavioural change, cultural change. The Panel discussed various topics and highlighted upon the aspects where Unions as well as organisations need to work together. The panelists discussed that a proactive approach needs to be adopted by the industries. While discussing the changing needs of the present generation of employees it was expressed that the labour have moved from fulfilment of needs to fulfilment of comforts. The changing scenario has amplified the need for training in order to cope with the new trends. The panel discussion was moderated by Mrs. Alpana Deshpande, VP-HR, Manas Agro Industries and Infrastructure Ltd. The panel discussion was compered by Prof. Rijuta Joshi.

Day 2 : Panel discussion on the topic “Next Generation HR Leadership”

One of the most critical and burning topic with respect to the HR leadership is handling Millennials. The next generation Human Resource will have the biggest impact on decision making in the organizations. Technology will be impacting how the businesses will be done. It is about maximizing emerging opportunities. Next generation HR leadership would be placing right people at the right place. It is also about hiring the right people, motivating people and having them engaged. In most of the organization 50%-70% cost is associated to people. Next generation HR leadership would play a strategic role and the organizational objectives should be aligned to people agenda to achieve growth and success. The present generation is born digital having avalanche of information available with them, wherein each individual is an enterprise in themselves. With respect to the Industry 4.0 the emerging trend is going to be data analytics and big data wherein the HR leaders would need to have knowledge of analytics and using it for their decision making. HR leaders can’t ignore the big role to be played by data analytics and need to be trained and prepared for it. It is important to build a culture which has the flexibility for dynamic policy of rules depending on the present situation. It is also important for the HR leaders to provide a shoulder of empathy.

Valedictory Function on 15/12/2018

MICON 2018 concluded with the valedictory ceremony on 15th December, 2018.

The Chief Guest for the Valedictory function was Dr. Vinod Khare, Executive Director (Western Region), PowerGrid Corporation of India Ltd. He was felicitated by Shri Satyanarayan Nuwal- Chairman, Solar Group & Vice Chairman, RCOEM.

The opening remarks were given by Mr. Rahul Dixit, CII Vidarbha Zonal Council and Convenor MICON 2018. He said that CII is an organization which is a bridge between Government and Industries. He said that he is a firm believer that HR is one of the key drivers for development of the Organization. Human Resource is a link between employees and the vision of the Organization.

The office bearers of CII Mr. Rahul Dixit and Mr. Abhaya Singh, Head Vidarbha Zone CII were felicitated by Shri Satyanarayan Nuwal, Chairman, Solar Group & Vice Chairman, RCOEM. The Conference summary of the two day event was presented by Dr. Rajiv Khaire, Organizing Secretary of MICON 2018.

Dr. Vinod Khare Chief Guest of the Function, appreciated the level of deliberations and sessions conducted during the two day conference. Human Resource is an art as it requires skills to structure process based organization. Identification of change and the reasons for resistance to change and its corrective implementation is need of the hour in Human Resource leading to the success of the Organization. He emphasized on the employee development of quadrant of Balanced Scorecard. He emphasized on the importance of industry and institute for quality education.

The Presidential address was given by Shri Satyanarayan Nuwal. He congratulated the organizers of the conference for bringing Nagpur on international map and appreciated the theme of the conference which was relevant to the dynamic HR scenario. He congratulated RCOEM for joining hands with CII and thereby opening avenues for more Industry Institute Interaction. Employees with special skills will have high attrition and engaging such employees would be the next big challenge to be faced by HR of the organization. To face the competition of today’s market, the technological development of the employees is a need of the hour. The Human Resource will have to address the emotional, intellectual and social needs of the employees. The audience were spell bound and mesmerized with his vision.
